Security Camera Planning and Installation Guide

Design for useful evidence, privacy, reliable power, and secure accounts

A practical guide to camera placement, recording, power, networking, privacy, and installer proposals—without promising that a camera prevents every incident.

Decide these points first

  • Which scenes need identification, observation, or simple activity awareness
  • Local, cloud, or hybrid recording and the required retention period
  • Wired, Wi-Fi, battery, or mixed power and communication paths
  • Who can view, export, delete, and share recordings

Start with the image you need

A camera is useful only when the recorded scene answers a defined question. A wide driveway view may show that a vehicle arrived but not produce a readable face or plate. A tight entry view may support identification but miss activity elsewhere. Define the purpose of each position before comparing resolution labels.

Walk the property at day and night. Note backlighting, porch lights, reflective walls, trees, street traffic, neighboring windows, and the likely path of a visitor. Ask a bidder to show the expected field of view and mounting height. More cameras do not repair bad angles, blocked infrared illumination, or a recorder that cannot retain the chosen settings.

Wired and wireless are not simple opposites

A Power over Ethernet camera can carry data and power on one cable, but the camera still depends on the switch, recorder, router, and their power sources. A wired link can continue locally during an internet outage if the local system is designed that way; remote viewing and cloud services may not. Request a diagram showing which functions survive each failure.

Wi-Fi and battery cameras can reduce drilling and work well for rentals or difficult locations. Their performance depends on signal quality, event volume, temperature, battery condition, and subscription features. Measure signal at the final mounting location and document charging or battery replacement. A hybrid design is often reasonable when the tradeoffs are explicit.

Calculate storage instead of accepting a day count

Retention depends on camera count, codec, bit rate, resolution, frame rate, continuous versus event recording, scene complexity, and usable drive capacity. Ask the bidder to show the assumptions behind a claimed number of days. Leave room for drive overhead and changing settings after installation.

Cloud recording shifts storage and remote-access responsibilities to a provider and usually depends on a plan. Local recording gives the owner physical control but creates duties for drive health, secure placement, updates, exports, and theft or fire risk. A hybrid approach can preserve critical events off-site while keeping longer local history. Verify encryption and deletion behavior for each path.

Privacy and cybersecurity belong in the installation scope

Do not point cameras into areas where the homeowner has no legitimate reason to record. Shared hallways, neighboring windows, bathrooms, bedrooms, audio recording, employee spaces, and public areas can raise legal or ethical issues. Local rules vary, so obtain qualified advice for sensitive use cases and use privacy zones where appropriate.

Require unique accounts, long passwords, multi-factor authentication when offered, least-privilege user roles, secure recovery methods, supported firmware, and a plan for removing former users. Keep cameras and recorders updated. The FTC and CISA both advise securing connected devices and accounts; an installer who leaves default credentials has not completed the job.

Accept the system with evidence

Final acceptance should include daytime and nighttime images from every camera, a test notification, live and recorded playback, a sample export, time synchronization, account transfer, backup-power behavior, and a written device list. Confirm that the owner—not only the installer—controls the administrative account.

Document cleaning, battery, storage-health, and update schedules. Recheck views after landscaping, construction, or seasonal lighting changes. No camera system guarantees prevention or police identification; its value comes from a clear purpose, dependable recording, lawful placement, and a household that knows how to retrieve evidence.

Put this in the written proposal

  • A device schedule with exact models, quantity, lens or field of view, power source, and weather rating
  • A marked placement plan showing useful scene coverage and privacy exclusions
  • Storage capacity assumptions based on resolution, frame rate, events, camera count, and retention
  • Network design, remote-access method, account roles, multi-factor authentication, and update responsibility
  • Cable routes, penetrations, patching, surge protection, backup power, and equipment cabinet location
  • Nighttime acceptance test, sample export, notification test, warranty, and maintenance plan

Common questions

Do security cameras require a subscription?

Not always. Some systems record locally without a cloud plan, while others reserve recording, detection, or remote features for subscriptions. Compare the exact model and plan, including what stops working after cancellation.

How many cameras does a house need?

There is no responsible universal number. Count the scenes needed for a defined purpose, then confirm each field of view, lighting condition, power path, privacy boundary, and storage requirement.

Will wired cameras keep recording during an internet outage?

They can if they record to powered local equipment and the local network remains available. Remote viewing, cloud recording, and notifications may still fail. Ask for a failure-mode diagram instead of assuming 'wired' means every function continues.
